Kempton Seniors Investing in Our Future!

When you walk into the lovely living room at Kempton of Rock Hill, large baskets filled with school clothing, book bags, notebooks, pens and pencils are a sign of something very special that happens monthly at the senior living community in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
The residents of Kempton of Rock Hill, which provides assisted living and memory care, love to give back to the greater community. For one of their most recent charitable efforts, they were excited to participate in a drive to donate school supplies to families served by Pilgrims’ Inn. The 40-year-old non-profit organization works to end homelessness and hunger for the most vulnerable in the Rock Hill community.
Leanne Pressley, executive director at Kempton of Rock Hill, says huge baskets for collecting donations were placed prominently near the front desk in our lively living room so no one could miss them.
The Pilgrims Inn supplied Kempton with a list of needed items including specific sized clothing, certain back-to-school supplies, etc. “Our wonderful residents and other generous donors can sign up to purchase a girl’s size 12 outfit, a boy’s size five shoes, notebooks, and/or a back pack, etc.” she says.
Filling the basket to the brim helps residents, their family members, staff and others feel united in a common cause to support the greater community.
It brings a sense of satisfaction every time they place a much-needed item in the basket and know they are making a positive change in another person’s life.
Kempton of Rock Hill holds similar philanthropic drives monthly. Other types of non-profits that the community has supported include food pantries, the local humane society, clothes closet for children in foster care, various healthcare philanthropies, etc.
“We’ve been doing this for years,” says Pressley. “This is part of our community culture. We choose a local charity that is dear to our hearts and needs support.”
Community partners, such as providers of physical therapy, home health, house calls, hospice or palliative care, rehabilitations facilities, etc. contribute donations, along with residents, residents’ families and friends, and associates of Kempton as well. This is a true community coming together to support the community at large.
Kempton residents are able to participate as they wish and are able, as some enjoy physically being a part of the giving, some the financial and others enjoy both. “Many of our residents go to the Pilgrim’s Inn to hand-deliver the many donations. Giving back is important to them, and it helps them feel and continue to know a true sense of purpose.” Pressley says. “This just shows that, no matter what your age, you can still contribute to the community!”
